Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, plans to show ads in its Threads app starting early next year. Threads is a social media app launched in July 2023 to compete with X (formerly called Twitter), which was bought by billionaire Elon Musk.

Since its launch, Threads has grown fast, reaching 275 million monthly users as of last month, according to Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.

In January 2025, Threads will let a small group of advertisers post ads on the app. Instagram’s advertising team is leading the effort to make this happen. However, Meta doesn’t expect the ads to make a big difference to their money in 2025, said Susan Li, Meta’s Chief Financial Officer.

Meta’s spokesperson said that right now, Threads is focused on creating a great experience for users, so there are no ads yet. But adding ads could attract businesses looking for alternatives to X, which has struggled to keep advertisers.

When Musk took over X in 2022, many advertisers stopped spending money on the platform because they were worried their ads might show up next to harmful or inappropriate content.
